Well, I’m a little behind on posting, but only by a about a day or so. The regular distractions came up, plus a death in the family has meant we’re on a quick trip out to Ontario. And we’re driving. So that hasn’t left a lot of time to write. So an unplanned vacation. At least we’ll get to see my grandmother this year. We didn’t think we’d be able to get out to Ontario this year. It’s just sad it’s for a funeral.
Other than that, not a whole lot for me to tell you about. I work my day job, and come home drained, and I don’t get to my craft area like I should. When I’m work, I can’t wait to get home to play with my hands making jewellery (or get into the sewing room—aka my room and sew), and then when I get home, I don’t know what to do, and end up doing nothing. I need to get up off my butt and do something, anything.
Mom is still working on her crochet. At home, she’s been working on a baby dress. When she’s in Mahone Bay, she works on an angel afghan.
I bought some supplies to try out embroidery now, too. You can call me crazy. There’s just a few things I’m interested in doing and making. That’s part of my problem—too many things to choose from. But the intention for this was to have something crafty to do when I’m volunteering at the “Hook ‘n’ Sea,” the craft and gift store in our little village where we sell some of our products.
I decided to volunteer because there are just a handful of regular volunteers, and one of them doesn’t really get any days off. I wanted to give her at least a few hours off. The only stipulation being that someone has to be back-up for me, as I am on call for my regular job.
Other than that, there’s not too much that’s new. Our five cats continue to make us laugh every day, even though they drive us crazy sometimes.
So, that’s just a little update. I’ll try to get in a better post in the coming days. But we’ll have to see what those days bring. Hopefully I’ll be able to publish a post next week at the latest.
If there’s anything you want to hear about, please leave a comment or email me your thoughts. I’d love to hear your ideas.
So for now, take care, and we’ll talk to you soon.
Well, it’s about time, huh? It’s been a while, but I’m here now, and, as usual, hope to make it a habit of posting more regularly.
So, you might be wondering what we’ve been up to. Well, Mom’s been making a bunch of baby dresses–very cute. I haven’t been doing as much creative work lately. I’ve been trying to do more behind the scenes business work. Product photography, marketing, you know, the fun stuff.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t leave a lot of time to create. Although, if I’m being honest, I could probably find the time. I guess I’m just going through a bit of a block right now. There’s so much I want to do, but I don’t want to spread myself too thin, either. I want to be able to become really good at the crafts I’m doing, but I don’t know if I can do that if I’m trying to do 3 or 4 (5?) things at once.
Mom and I have decided to take a break with the craft fairs this year. We may still do some, but we’re going to be more picky about the ones we do.
If you’re wondering about the garage makeover–it’s pretty much on hold. We haven’t been in there really since last year. It would be nice to get all our craft supplies out there and out of the house. But for now, we will just try to organize the best we can.
Well, that’s all I really have for today. Just as a reminder, you can find Mom’s crochet items at Happy Life Crafts on Etsy, and I’ve started a shop for my items under Five Cat Creations. We hope you’ll come over to our shops and look around and maybe even “favourite” our shops.
Until next time (which will hopefully be next week at the latest!).
Take care, and follow your passions.
Gini and Kendra
We’ve decided to break up our handmade items and sell them separately. I’ve been working on the Etsy shop, and what I was reading made it seem like it would be better to have Mom’s crochet items and my jewellery in different shops. I already have another domain, Ocean Renewal, that I haven’t been doing too much with, so that will be my blog for my jewellery items, and what I will hopefully name my Etsy shop. I’ve been focusing on Mom’s Etsy site and such first, plus I think my jewellery needs a little work before selling on Etsy again.
For now, I do have some items up on Mom’s Etsy shop, so please see what is currently being offered.
With winter here, we haven’t made much (any) progress on turning the garage into a craft studio. But with the better weather that’s hopefully just around the corner, we’ll get back out there and have it ready by the summer, fall at the latest.
And we’ll be having our first craft fair of the year–April 22, 2017, I believe. I’ll provide more details as the time comes closer.
Hopefully everyone is staying safe and warm this winter.
So, I’m a little slow already this year. Oh well. There’s lots of time to pick up the pace this year still.
We’ve been working on our crafts, especially Mom. She has a condition that is limiting what she can do right now, but she can still crochet, and she’s been doing a lot of that!
I, of course, am a bit slower with my crafting. After working at my full-time job, it’s hard to get motivated to do anything in the evening.
I’ve put a few things up on the Etsy shop. Right now just some fashion scarves, but plan to get some ear warmer headbands up today.
We don’t have any craft fair plans at the moment. We’re going to be a little more discerning about the ones we do this year. We are hoping to get back to the Lobster Expo in Barrington Passage this year–we had a good time there last year and was one of our best shows (this time, though we won’t spend all our earnings at the other vendors’ tables!). And if we can do Tooie’s Christmas craft fair again, that would be great. And probably a few more if we can.
We’re going to focus on our online sales for a bit. I’m hoping to get a shop up and running on the website soon. For now, though, everything will be on Etsy. We’re focusing on the Canadian market for now, due to the cost of postage, but I’m sure we’ll expand where we will ship to.
Well, I think that’s all that’s new for now. I’ll be back in about a week to show what we’ve been up to.
Thanks for stopping by. If there’s anything you see that you’re interested in, or have a custom order request, just contact us at admin (at) happylifecrafts (dot) com.
Kendra and Gini (aka Mom)
This blogging thing looks a lot easier than it is! I always have plans to come and publish a post, but life gets in the way, and it doesn’t happen. Really going to try hard to get into a routine, and post at least once a week. Mom has indicated she may be interested as well, which would help.
In other news, the garage clean up has kind of stalled. I don’t know if it will get done this year or not. It probably won’t take a lot of work–it probably looks worse than it is. But with the cooler weather and it getting dark so early, well, we’ve been using that as excuses not to get out there. I mean, there is a light in the garage, and a pellet stove. So there should be no excuses.
Also, we’ve been preparing for some upcoming craft fairs (which is another excuse for not getting into the garage). The big one is this coming week–Tooie’s Christmas Craft Fair. It’s a 2-day event this Saturday, October 22, and Sunday, October 23 from 10-4. I’m nervous because everyone always has nice displays and product. Not worried about mom’s products–she does quality work, although we do have to work on display for her. But I’m not sure my
I’m nervous because everyone always has nice displays and product there. Not worried about mom’s products–she does quality work, although we do have to work on display for her. But I’m not sure my jewellery will fit in, and I struggle with displaying it nicely, too. I hope to do a practice run before we do the actual set up on Friday.
A lot of people come to Tooie’s event. I’m not sure how long it’s been going on. I think at least as long as I’ve been in the area, which is 12 years now. Well, if nothing else, it will be a great learning experience.
The next week, on Sunday, October 30 from 12-4 the downtown is having a SWITCH event. They close off part of Main St., downtown, and retailers have specials, and crafters are able to bring their items for sale as well. There’s also food vendors and other activities (pumpkin carving competition, this time). It will depend on the weather, however–if it’s really cold, windy or rainy, we likely won’t tough it out (we can be wimps!).
Then the next event will be Christmas at the Grand on Saturday, November 19, 10-3 I believe. Another event in Barrington Passage on Saturday, November 26 (I think 10-2), and finally the Wrap it up Christmas shopping event at the Rodd Grand on Sunday, December 4 (10-3, if I recall). Then we can relax for the rest of the Christmas Season (hah!).
I’m looking forward to my first Christmas and New Year’s not being on-call for work in eight years. I’m taking the whole week off! I’m so looking forward to my final vacation of the year!
Well, that about wraps it up for now. I want and need to get some product photos done, so I’ll be adding those as soon as I can. If you see anything you like, but want it in a different colour, just ask. Or see something that isn’t being offered, just ask. Custom orders are available. In fact, Mom’s working on one right now.
Anyone planning on going to any craft fairs, either as a vendor or a shopper?
Ever since my mom moved in with all her yarn, and I’ve become obsessed with a couple of crafts of my own, all the supplies have been overtaking the house. So, we’ve decided to create a craft studio in the garage.
It’s a detached garage (which of course is currently full of “stuff”–big surprise). A previous owner put in a pellet stove for heat, as she was a painter/artist, and there really is not an appropriate space in the house for that sort of thing. So, it has been an art studio before. There are even some bags of pellets that they left behind.
The plan, over time, is to insulate and drywall the garage. We’ve even had an offer of help with the insulation installation and the vapour barrier.!
As alluded to before, it’s a mess in the garage right now, but we’re making progress. Hopefully by the end of the summer we’ll be moving our craft supplies in.
I can’t wait to have a nice, organized space for all our craft supplies.
In other news, there’s not much news. We had a good two-day event at the Lobster Expo and Market in Barrington the beginning of June. At this point, that was the last one until November. But, we’ll still be working hard growing our inventory, working on improving our Etsy shop and posting new items, and taking some of our items to a local consignment store.
So, we’re plugging along doing what we love. For now, I’ll sign off. I’ll be back in a week with updates on our garage make-over, and a bit about a new craft I’m going to try out.
Have a great week, and keep creating!
Welcome to Happy Life Crafts, where we will showcase what we make, and have a little fun along the way.
My mother and I enjoy crafting, and we want to share our experiences with you. There will be updates on what products we’re working on and any craft fairs we are attending. For those who live close by, watch for our announcements as we may provide special deals if you attend our event. For those who live farther away, we are currently on Etsy and plan to open another online shop in the near future. More products will be added soon, so keep an eye out!
If you don’t find what you’re looking for, or in the right colour, please contact us, as custom orders may be available.
Down the road, we may offer tutorials, patterns, and such, so please follow us as we embark on this journey.
Our goal is to post here at least once a week on Tuesdays. We hope you’ll subscribe to be the first to get all the details on this grand adventure.
